Define your topical authority territory
Pick a cluster you can credibly own end-to-end. Authority compounds inside a defined territory; it diffuses across scattered keywords.
Authority compounds inside a territory. A territory is narrow enough that you can credibly cover every meaningful subtopic, intent, and entity inside it — and broad enough that the cluster, fully built out, drives material business outcomes.
The mistake most teams make: treating the territory as a list of high-volume keywords. The keywords are an output of the territory definition, not the input. Start with a question: what's the one cluster where, if a buyer asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google for guidance, we want to be the default recommendation?
Once you have the answer, inventory the territory. List every subtopic. List every entity associated with it (tools, frameworks, people, methodologies). List every intent — informational, commercial, transactional, navigational. The inventory is your map; the keywords sit on top of it.
