Core Web Vitals

Core Web Vitals are Google's metrics for measuring page experience quality: Largest Contentful Paint (LCP, loading speed), Interaction to Next Paint (INP, interactivity responsiveness), and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS, visual stability). They're confirmed Google ranking factors that affect both traditional search rankings and, indirectly, AI search visibility.

For AI search visibility, Core Web Vitals matter primarily through two mechanisms. First, Google AI Overviews use Google's search index as their source pool — pages that rank higher in Google (partly due to good Core Web Vitals) are more likely to enter the AI Overview candidate set. Second, extremely poor performance can affect AI crawler behavior: pages that take too long to respond may time out when GPTBot, PerplexityBot, or other AI crawlers attempt to fetch them.

However, Core Web Vitals are NOT a direct AI citation factor. A page with perfect Lighthouse scores but poor content extractability won't be cited. A page with mediocre performance but excellent extractable content will be cited, as long as it doesn't time out during crawling.

The practical recommendation: ensure your pages pass Core Web Vitals thresholds (LCP under 2.5 seconds, INP under 200ms, CLS under 0.1) as part of foundational SEO. Then focus AI optimization effort on the signals that actually determine citation: content extractability, schema markup, E-E-A-T signals, and AI crawler access. Performance is a necessary foundation, not a citation differentiator.
