AEO vs SEO: The 2026 Comparison
SEO ranks blue links. AEO gets you cited as the direct answer. Search Engine Optimization (SEO, established ~1997) targets ranking on the results page so users click through to your site. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO, coined by Jason Barnard at Trustpilot in January 2018) targets being extracted as the answer itself — across featured snippets, voice assistants, and generative AI engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, and Google AI Overviews. With 68% of US Google searches ending without a click in early 2026 (SparkToro, June 2026), AEO has shifted from optional to essential.
60-second answer
- SEO optimizes pages to rank on the search results page so users click your link.
- AEO optimizes pages to be extracted as the direct answer — featured snippets, voice responses, Knowledge Panels, AI Overview citations, and ChatGPT/Perplexity/Gemini/Copilot mentions.
- The disciplines overlap on technical foundations (crawlability, schema, E-E-A-T) and diverge on tactics (keyword density vs question-format H2s; backlinks vs earned-media citations).
- Neither replaces the other. 32% of Google searches still send a click (SparkToro June 2026) — SEO still matters where clicks happen; AEO captures the 68% where they don't.
- Practical recommendation: do both. SEO foundations are prerequisites for AEO; AEO captures the answer-layer where SEO can't reach.
AEO vs SEO: 11-dimension comparison
Every meaningful dimension where AEO and SEO actually differ — sourced and current as of June 2026.
| Dimension | SEO | AEO |
|---|---|---|
| Primary goal | Rank on the search results page so users click your link | Be extracted as the direct answer — featured snippets, voice responses, AI Overview citations |
| Origin | Industry consensus ~1997 | Jason Barnard (with Chee Lo, Trustpilot) — January 2018 white paper “The New Face of SEO: Answer Engine Optimization” |
| Surfaces optimized for | Blue-link organic results, image search, video carousels | Featured snippets, People Also Ask, Knowledge Panels, voice assistants (Alexa, Siri, Google Assistant), AI Overviews, ChatGPT/Perplexity/Gemini citations |
| Click outcome | Click on a result navigates the user to your site | User often gets the answer without clicking — 68% of Google searches were zero-click in early 2026 (SparkToro) |
| Headline content tactic | Comprehensive long-form content; backlinks; keyword targeting | Question-format H2s with 40-60 word direct-answer paragraphs immediately under each heading |
| Schema markup that matters | Article, Product, BreadcrumbList for rich results | Article + Organization + Person (still parsed by AI); FAQPage rich results retired May 7, 2026 but markup still extracted by AI engines; HowTo rich results deprecated August 2023 |
| Primary KPI | Organic clicks, keyword rankings, organic conversions | Featured snippet wins, citation rate in AI answers, share of voice across answer surfaces |
| Best free measurement tool | Google Search Console (clicks/impressions/queries) | Google Search Console AI Mode tab (since June 2025) + Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance report (Feb 9, 2026) |

| Realistic timeline to first results | 3-9 months for new content to rank | 4-12 weeks for AI engines to re-crawl and re-index; off-domain citations can shift share within days |
| Does it replace the other? | Still meaningful: 32% of Google searches send a click (SparkToro June 2026) | Built on SEO fundamentals — Princeton's GEO paper used SEO-baseline documents as the starting point |
Where GEO fits — SEO vs AEO vs GEO
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) was coined in the 2024 Princeton paper by Aggarwal et al. (arXiv:2311.09735, KDD 2024). It's the LLM-specific subset of the broader AEO umbrella. In practice, AEO, GEO, and LLMO have ~80% overlapping tactics — Wikipedia's GEO entry explicitly notes no consensus academic definition distinguishes them as of early 2026.
| Discipline | Targets | Coined |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Blue-link ranking on Google, Bing, image/video search | ~1997, industry consensus |
| AEO | Direct-answer surfaces: featured snippets, PAA, voice, Knowledge Panels, AI Overviews, generative AI citations | Jason Barnard / Trustpilot, January 2018 |
| GEO | Generative AI engine citations specifically — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, AI Overviews | Aggarwal et al., Princeton, November 2023 (KDD 2024) |

What's actually changed in 2026
Zero-click reached 68%. SparkToro's June 2026 study using Similarweb panel data found 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click in January-April 2026 — up from 60.45% in 2024. AI Overviews now reduce CTR by 58% when present (Ahrefs Feb 2026 update). The answer layer is where the majority of search behavior now resolves.
Google retired FAQPage rich results on May 7, 2026. The schema markup is still valid Schema.org and still parsed by AI engines for extraction — but it no longer produces the visible rich result on the Google SERP. HowTo rich results were deprecated in August 2023. The implication: schema work for AI extraction is decoupled from schema work for Google rich results. Keep both; don't expect FAQPage to produce the SERP enhancement it used to.
Voice plateaued — and that's a feature, not a bug. Edison Research's Infinite Dial 2025 found 34% of Americans 12+ own a smart speaker (~101M people), the fourth consecutive year at roughly one-third. Voice isn't exploding, but it's a stable, large surface — and now overlaps with AI assistants (ChatGPT voice, Gemini Live) that share AEO citation patterns.
AEO now spans voice + snippets + AI engines. The 2018 framing (AEO = voice + featured snippets) expanded post-2024 to include ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, and AI Overview citations. The Princeton GEO paper (Aggarwal et al., 2024) gave the AI-specific subset its own academic name, but the underlying tactics — direct-answer paragraphs, citable statistics, named author E-E-A-T, schema content-match — work across all AEO surfaces.
Should you do AEO or SEO? Quick decision tree
Do SEO first if…
- You have no organic traffic baseline at all — start with crawlability, indexability, and on-page basics.
- Your category is heavily commercial/transactional — these still trigger AI Overviews less often than informational queries.
- You have a small team and can only sustain one discipline — SEO foundations are also AEO foundations.
Add AEO when…
- SEO foundations are stable and your category has informational query share (most B2B SaaS, education, health, finance).
- You already see AI Overviews triggering on your priority queries.
- You've lost traffic to zero-click and need to capture the citation that's replacing the click.
- Competitors are getting cited in AI engines for queries your brand should own.
For most teams in 2026, the right answer is both in parallel — SEO foundations are prerequisites for AEO, and the marginal cost of running them together is roughly 10-20% more than SEO alone.
Where AEO and SEO overlap (8 wins for both)
The foundational work that benefits both disciplines simultaneously. Start here if you're building from scratch.
- Crawlability and indexability — both disciplines need AI/Google bots to access your pages
- Author E-E-A-T signals — named authors, bylines, credentials, publication dates
- Page-level technical health — site speed, mobile-friendliness, HTTPS, clean URLs
- Structured data — Article, Organization, Person schema parsed by both Google and AI engines
- Topical authority — site-wide coverage of a subject area, not just one-off posts
- Content freshness — dateModified hygiene; AI engines down-weight stale content
- Internal linking — helps both SERP discovery and AI entity-graph clarity
- Brand entity consistency — Wikipedia/Wikidata/Knowledge Graph alignment improves both rank and citation
Where they diverge — same goal, different tactics
Both disciplines target visibility. The tactical differences show up in how you structure content and where you invest off-page effort.

Forrester data is from a webinar poll of 150 B2B marketers, attributed accordingly. Vendor sources (BrightEdge, Otterly) are flagged inline where used. AEO origin: Jason Barnard with Chee Lo at Trustpilot is credited with coining the term in January 2018 — contemporaneous trade press treated AEO as an emerging concept without attributing creation, so “credited with coining” is the defensible phrasing.
